In this era of low-fat foods and fat-free diets, fats have received a terrible reputation. Incorrect information has led many to believe that all fats are bad for health. This is untrue, good fats, or unsaturated fats (Essential Fatty Acids) should make up 25% of the diet.

This includes oil-rich nutritious foods like nuts, seeds and avocados – avocados can never be to blame for heart disease! These are the good fats, vitally important and necessary for life itself.

These fats also help to metabolise bad fat and are termed Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s). The term essential means the body cannot produce EFA’s itself and must therefore be provided through the foods we consume. The two essential fatty acids that must be within the foods we eat are alpha-linolenic acid (Omega 3) and linolenic acid (Omega 6). These two EFA’S are required more so by the body than the other major essential nutrients.
